Marathon for Ukraine
Posted by Roger Hill on 19 July 2022
On Sunday 3rd July over 120 people, both members and non-members, came to GMLTC to ensure we had continuous play from 05.00am to 21.00pm - dawn till dusk, with up to 8 courts occupied at times, all aimed at raising money.
The £2650 raised is being split between the DEC Ukraine (providing food, clean water, and shelter to families impacted by the conflict) and GMLTC itself providing a pot of money to support Ukranian refeguees who wish to play tennis here, providing kit and coaching.
Blue and yellow kit was widely evident with Angela Jones picking up the 'best-dressed' prize whilst Ajit Kadirgamar scopped the 'most time on court' award.
Local businesses supported the event in various ways - thanks to Big Sky, Alphabet Soup, The Nags Head, The New Akash, Hildreths, Woody & Friends, Booker Wholesale, The Coop, Peterley Manor Farm, Sportscene, The Plant Specialist and Rebeliion Brewery.
Huge thanks to Kate Miller for organising the event, spending the whole day at the club, to Lara Fear for doing a dawn coaching session, to Phil Fowler for a racket demo session, to all the other volunteers who helped in the kitchen and with organisation making the day a great success and to everyone for their generosity.
